OVERVIEW
Mylan Pharmaceuticals (now Viatris), a global leader in the pharmaceutical industry, partnered with OBLIQ to develop a patient-centric mobile application. The goal was to provide a simple, reliable tool for diabetic patients to manage their complex treatment schedules for injectable medications. This project was about more than just technology; it was about improving patient safety, increasing treatment efficacy, and demonstrating a commitment to patient well-being.
Involvement
- Native & Cross-Platform Mobile Application Development
- UI/UX Design & Research
- Micro-Experiences & Performance Support Tools
- Instructional Design & Interactive Content Creation
Challenges
The primary challenge was designing a solution for a non-technical audience that addressed critical health needs within a highly regulated industry.
- Complex Treatment Schedules: Patients using specific injectable medications needed a foolproof tool to manage complex, non-daily dosage schedules and injection site rotation.
- High Risk of Non-Adherence: Forgetting dosages or failing to properly rotate injection sites can reduce treatment efficacy and lead to health complications, a major concern for both patients and the client.
- Need for Patient-Centric Support: Mylan wanted to provide a value-added service beyond the medication itself to improve patient outcomes, enhance safety, and build brand trust.
The OBLIQ Solution
OBLIQ developed a user-friendly and reliable mobile application that put patient needs first.
- Native Mobile Applications: We developed separate, highly-optimized native apps for both iOS and Android to ensure maximum performance, reliability, and accessibility for all patients, regardless of their device.
- Intuitive Dosage & Schedule Selection: We designed a clean and simple UI that allowed patients to easily select their prescribed dosage and set their non-consecutive injection day schedule with just a few taps.
- Visual Injection Site Tracker: We created an easy-to-use visual body map for patients to log and rotate their injection sites, helping to prevent complications and improve medication administration practices.
- Smart Reminders & Notifications: We implemented a system of intelligent and customizable reminders to ensure patients adhered to their prescribed schedule, improving treatment consistency.
Our Approach
Our approach was guided by empathy and a rigorous focus on user experience and regulatory compliance. We understood that for a medical application, trust and simplicity are paramount.
Empathy-Driven Design
We began with extensive user persona research to understand the needs, anxieties, and potential technology barriers of the target patient population, ensuring the design was accessible to everyone.
Prioritizing Simplicity
Throughout the design process, our mantra was “clarity and ease-of-use.” We deliberately stripped away any unnecessary features to create an application that was intuitive and stress-free for patients to use daily.
Navigating Regulatory Hurdles
We worked in close collaboration with Mylan’s medical and regulatory teams from day one. This partnership ensured that all content, functionality, and data handling practices were fully compliant with stringent healthcare regulations.
Native App Strategy
We made the strategic decision to build separate native applications for iOS and Android. This guaranteed the highest level of performance, reliability, and integration with each operating system’s notification features, which was critical for a time-sensitive medical tool.
The Results
The application was a success, providing tangible benefits for both patients and the Mylan brand.
- Improved Patient Adherence & Safety: The app provided a simple yet powerful tool that helped thousands of patients manage their treatment effectively and safely.
- Enhanced Brand Loyalty: By delivering a valuable support tool, Mylan strengthened its relationship with patients and demonstrated a clear commitment to their well-being beyond the point of sale.
- Positive Impact on Health Outcomes: The app directly contributed to better medication administration practices, supporting improved health outcomes and quality of life for its users.
